“You’re going to get hate mail.” ⬆️ This is something a reader of my manuscript said to me—a reader who spoke from experience, having received hate mail for her latest work of non-fiction (which won major awards, so there.) Her response wasn’t meant to be hurtful; simply a statement of fact. If anything, I took the feedback as a compliment. You know you’re tapping into something raw and real when what you say makes people uncomfortable.
Today, as I’m working through a final round of manuscript edits before this beast of a book gets sent back to my publisher (for more edits, to be sure), I’m trying to draw strength from other powerful books of non-fiction I’ve read that have provoked and challenged me toward new, arguably better understandings of narrative, interaction and connection. 📚💕 Stay strong, writers. Keep speaking your truths.
