A century ago there were probably more than 230,000 orangutans in total, but the Bornean orangutan is now estimated at about 104,700 based on updated geographic range (Endangered) and the Sumatran about 7,500 (Critically Endangered).
The main cause of extinction of the Orangutan is loss of habitat by humans for Palm oil. Over 75% of Orangutan habitat has been destroyed in the past 20 years, and there are over 6,000 Orangutans killed every year. At this rate, the Sumatran populations will be extinct in less than 5 years, and the Bornean populations will be extinct in less than 15.
You can make a difference by refusing to support Palm products. Do the research. Most processed foods contain palm oil, and in addition to being destructive, they are generally very unhealthy.
