This week, the House Judiciary Committee held two important field hearings on the discriminatory barriers to voting, and the impact of the Trump Administration’s border policies on migrant communities and domestic terrorism. It was a pleasure joining @repcohen in Memphis, who organized a moving tour through the National Civil Rights Museum, and Rep. Escobar in El Paso, whose community welcomed us with open arms.
It has been a pleasure joining my friend @repcohen for a House Judiciary field hearing on voting rights this morning in Memphis, followed by a visit to the National Civil Rights Museum. An amazing experience and history lesson that continues to guide us all.
Today is the 50th Anniversary of the #Stonewall Uprising, a major civil rights turning point in America. I’m proud we created the Stonewall National Monument because #LGBT history is American history. We honor Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera & others by continuing the fight.
And this year, the House passed the first ever comprehensive LGBTQ civil rights bill — #HR5 , the #EqualityAct . This legislation is a MAJOR step forward for equality. We will see these protections signed into law.
Yesterday, the House Judiciary Committee held our first hearing on the Trump Administration’s cruel family separation policy. It is unbelievable that over the past two years, the Administration has inflicted traumatic damage to these families without any congressional oversight. We will continue to fight to #KeepFamiliesTogether .
Today, I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve as Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee at a critical time in our nation’s history. I look forward to working with my colleagues to safeguard our democracy and protect the rule of law, as well as fight for a more just and inclusive society, defending voting rights, civil rights, and civil liberties. Thank you to @VanityFair@MartinSchoeller for the great photo with my fellow incoming Democratic chairs!
Excited to launch my Instagram account, where I'll be sharing updates about my work representing New York’s 10th Congressional District. As Congress heads into the August recess, I'm excited to announce that I will be hosting two Congress on Your Corner Events in Brooklyn and Battery Park City. This recess is a great opportunity to engage with constituents and hear directly about what issues are most important to you. I look forward to hearing from you and hope you'll be able to join me.
